The Orhipean-Ochagavia Festival

The Orhipean-Ochagavia Festival : a cultural visit to the past

Look back to the past to promote the future. The Orhipean festival aims to recreate everyday life in Ochagavia at the beginning of last century. The ambiance of which has been fully recreated in the town and the participating inhabitants duly dress up in the clothes and hairstyles of the epoch, while various traditional tasks and activities are organised.

This festival was developed with a clearly defined purpose and vocation. Its aim is to promote tourism in Ochagavia and its vocation is to achieve this through the recuperation of the area’s rich cultural heritage. It appears to be a festival of professions and traditions. For a whole weekend in Ochagavia, you can see craftsmen of professions which are almost forgotten today, and Ochagavian and Pyrenean traditions in general.

Ochagavia’s own inhabitants organise the festival, and above all participate in it. In teams they re-enact spinning, matatxerri (pig slaughtering), laundering, threshing... that is, an ordinary day in the life of Ochagavia at the beginning of last century.

This year, for the project, 2011, Year of the Pyrenees, there will be extra activities :

  • A Craft Fair: to present ancient Pyrenean professions and traditions.
  • Concerts/ Music/ Street theatre: to introduce the Pyrenean culture.
  • Spinning Lessons
  • A gathering of Great Pyrenees...
