Festival Résistances

From the 8th to the 16th of July 2011

For its fifteenth edition, for 9 days from the 8th to the 16th of July 2011, the festival is offering the screening of about a hundred films - documentary and fiction. Four themes will be evoked by these films, followed by discussions with their makers. Social justice, biopiracy, Roll on old age! Grow, believe and grow some more, as well as a Pyrenean programme and a zoom on Brazilian cinema. The film makers Jean-Marie and Arnaud Larrieu, Caroline Serreau and Maurice Failevic will be honoured this year with retrospectives.

Every year, about thirty film makers and about twenty discussion speakers participate in Résistance. A special programme for children and teenagers is developed every day with educational image and animation workshops. There are over 10 000 visitors, with about half from Ariege and the other half coming from elsewhere especially for the festival. By its policy of partnership with national media, the Festival Resistances participates in the attractiveness of the Pyrenean territory while continuing to be an event in which the people from Ariege identify themselves.

For 2011: for the Year of the Pyrenees: there will be a daily Pyrenean programme.

Every day there will be a screening-discussion on the Pyrenees in the presence of the film maker and a speaker. Each day it will be on a different topic, a French or Spanish film, filmed in the mountains and which identifies either a modern problematic or a historical fact common to all the Pyrenean territories, will be shown. For example we will screen films on the Retirada, Felip Solé’s Camps d’Argeles, on Pyrenean resistances, Jacques Nichet’s La Guerre des demoiselles, on the Caston habitat, on biodiversity, Pascale Ferrat’s La Peau de L’ours, on demographic trends with Jacky Tujaque’s Cette Montagne, c’est ma télé...

A special day and evening with the Pyrenean film makers, Jean-Marie and Arnaud Larrieu. Born in Lourdes in the Hautes-Pyrénées, the Larrieu brothers are young film makers who already have a substantial filmography behind them. Where their fetish actors, Mathieu Amalric and Sabine Azéma must always deal with a third character, the mountain. We will screen 3 of their films shot in the Pyrenees: La Brèche de Roland, Un homme, un vrai, Les derniers jours du monde, preceeded by their autobiographical documentary, Les Fenêtres sont ouvertes.

A major debate: Is there a Pyrenean identity? With speakers, sociologists, researcher from the French and Spanish Pyrenees. A territory parcelled out through an administrative division (2 countries, 7 regions, 10 departments) and by differing cultural practices (6 languages), the Pyreneans are centred more on their regional capital than on their neighbours, separated by mountains which sometimes cannot be crossed. And yet the heritage traditions, political history and current ways of life in the Pyrenees create bonds. Can we speak of a common culture in the Pyrenees today?

In all, 11 films and about twenty film makers and speakers will be cordially invited to this special programme on the Pyrenees.
